Drinking and Driving
Drinking and Driving
Drinking and driving kills thousands of people each and every year, and yet people continue to do this. There are many reasons people drink and drive. The biggest reason is because people do not think they are drunk if they are just “buzzed.” You may have seen the commercials though – “buzzed driving is drunk driving” or the “nailed” commercials. This is a big deal, and law enforcement is cracking down.
Since law enforcement has been cracking down on drunk drivers, it has improved the number of people injured or killed by drunk drivers, but it still remains in the thousands each year. This is something serious, and you should never drink and drive. If you think you have been desensitized – you haven’t been. You need to make sure you do not drive if you have drank recently. While alcohol is legal for responsible adults to drink, it is illegal to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
What Happens After Drinking?
After you have been drinking and you decide to get behind the wheel of a car, you are putting everyone’s life in danger. It is hard enough to stay focused with all of the other distractions going on around you, but whenever you add alcohol, things get dangerous.
When you are intoxicated, your senses are impaired. You will have a lapse in focus and judgement, and you should not be operating a vehicle or any other machinery. You should have all of your senses about you any time that you operate a vehicle. If you don’t, you could injure or even kill someone else or yourself.
Along with thousands of people killed by drunk drivers, there are thousands of people injured. You may also be interested to know there are millions of dollars in damages and fees paid every year because of people that drive while they are drunk. This means that not only is driving while drunk dangerous, but it is also costly.
If you get caught drinking and driving, you can get in serious trouble. There are different levels of punishment that will be implemented depending on how drunk you were when you were driving, and if you had previous run-ins with the law. Some of these include fines, defensive driving courses, service for the community, and even jail time for repeat offenders.
As you can see, this is serious and you need to pay attention to yourself, and your friends. If a friend is going to drive while drunk, make sure that you do not allow them to do so. You need to find a way to get those people to their destination without allowing them to drive.
What Should I Do?
Some people suggest that you drink coffee after you drink alcohol. Sure, some caffeine is going to make you feel a little more hyped up, but it is not going to help you regain your senses. The only thing you can do about driving drunk is not do it. Give someone else the car keys if you have been drinking. Get a designated driver or taxi cab to get you to your destination.
Whenever you say no to drunk driving, you can save a life. Getting to where you want to be is not as valuable as saving a life. Speak with an attorney that can help you get your auto accident settlement if you have been injured by a drunk driver.
